You can search on them in much the same way as the library catalog to find printed materials and ebooks. Begin your search with some of the larger ones such as Academic Search Complete by right clicking with your mouse on the link above, Databases Listed Alphabetically. Try using the same type of search terms as in searching the catalog, such as Underground Railroad, fugitive slaves, etc. Remember to put the quotation marks around your search terms so that you are able to achieve better results.
Searching on Academic Search Complete by using “underground railroad” and “fugitive slaves” will help you find about forty results of useful materials. The database will bring up the results in a variety of formats such as academic journals, periodicals, online books, book reviews, conferences, and newspaper articles. An abstract is given to tell a little about the piece for you to see if it would be helpful to you. The materials of the results can viewed and downloaded in HTML and/or PDF file formats.
MasterFILE Premier is another excellent database. You can find it by clicking on the Ebsco: Search All Ebsco Databases group. Once there, click on EBSCOhost Web - All databases. Go down to MasterFILE Premier. On that page, search with the same kind of terms as on Academic Search Complete and the library catalog. Many of the results will be the same as in other databases such as Academic Search Complete but some new ones come up too. I was able to find seventy-six results in formats such as academic journals, periodicals, online books, book reviews, conferences, and newspaper articles as well as a reference resource and an online biography. The same HTML and/or PDF file formats can be seen and downloaded. This database is particularly helpful because by clicking on the results, one can then click on listen and be able to hear a person reading the article, from, or about the resource. The MP3 can also be downloaded.
